History
Destin is named after Leonard Destin who came from Connecticut and settled in around 1845. The community was home to many fisherman, catching world class fish and quickly known as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village. Fishing is still very much a part of the culture.
Destin Activities
Destin is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida! The beautiful beaches attract you to the area, and the variety of ‘things to do’ will keep you coming back again and again. It won’t take long to discover why families have made Destin their annual vacation destination!
Originally known for its world class fishing, if you haven’t been fishing, this is the vacation to ‘head out to sea’. You may also want to try flyfishing while in the area. If you want to fish on your own schedule, just west of Destin is Okaloosa Island, a short 10 minute drive. Okaloosa Island has a fishing pier that offers pole rentals, bait and tackle, and you fish off the pier.
Harborwalk Village is on the west end of Destin, offering many restaurants, shopping, and the home of the Destin harbor. If you want to go snorkeling, SNUBA diving, or take a shelling tour this is where you will catch your boat. During the summer months, view fireworks every Thursday from Harborwalk Village. Destin Commons is a shopping center in the center of Destin, just after the mid-bay bridge. They offer a lot of shopping and dining experiences, and bowling to boot!
Baytowne is on the east end of Destin and offers more options for dining and shopping. Another family friendly area to keep you entertained. Silver Sands Factory Outlets is near Baytowne, you may shop to your hearts desire from their vast selection of stores.
